The Huawei Mate 30 may become the first smartphone to ship along with a chipset made with an Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) process. The Chipset is named as Kirin 985 and made at the TSMC foundries.

This chip is 7nm, though the EUV enhancement allows it 20% greater transistor density. This will be put up for sale at 7+ nm. The EUV benefits would be more enhanced as nodes get smaller i.e. about 5nm.

For higher performance, the Kirin 985 will be with increased clock speeds and might be more power saving as well, but the CPU & GPU architecture will largely stay the same. Though, the chipset will come up with a 5G in-built modem.

In the past year, the Apple A12 Bionic was the first 7nm chipset ever shipped in a commercial product, however, the Kirin 985 has come up first. Both chipsets were made by TSMC and it seems drastic competition between both will come up this year, though Apple will stick with TSMC.

Huawei had bigger goals than just becoming a “world’s first” title. The company wanted to become more self-sufficient than this and wanted to be at the point where 60% of chipsets uses made by HiSilicon. In the initial days of 2019, this figure was 45% and 40% last year.

Huawei’s high-end smartphones are on Kirin, but their entry-level line up still depends on external chipsets. This conveys the meaning that the MediaTek could be the first to feel the out-turn of the new strategy.
